Central Valley Legislators Call on Gov. Brown to Address Realignment Disparity

Thursday, December 6, 2012

SACRAMENTO – Assemblymember Susan Talamantes Eggman joined a bipartisan group of Central Valley legislators calling on Governor Jerry Brown to address the continuing disparity in funding of the state's public safety realignment – which shifted the responsibility for thousands of inmates from the state to counties.

The funding to offset that realignment has not been proportionate, and many counties, particularly in the Central Valley, are receiving much less per inmate than other counties.

In an open letter, the legislators, including Eggman and State Senator Cathleen Galgiani, called on the governor to provide more aid to those counties with a greater proportion of offenders affected by realignment.

"Stockton and San Joaquin County already struggle with a significant crime problem, with police and deputies thin on the ground, and overburdened court probation and juvenile justice systems," Eggman said. "We can't address our existing challenges if we don't reverse this disparity."
