Statement from Senator Galgiani and Assemblymember Eggman on Budget Funding for Helicopter for Stockton Police Department
SACRAMENTO – This year’s state budget contains a one-time expenditure of $3 million for the City of Stockton to purchase a police helicopter. This budget victory for our community is the result of more than two years of efforts between the city and our two offices. We are grateful that legislative leaders and the Governor recognized the need for this purchase, which will help improve public safety in Stockton.
A police helicopter will benefit the community in a number of ways, including: reducing response times, increasing suspect apprehensions, helping to locate missing persons, helping with search and rescue operations, and reducing the risk to citizens and officers during vehicle pursuits.
In the past, the Stockton Police Department has had to rely on the CHP helicopter located in Auburn, which, at best, results in a 30-minute response time. Stockton is the southern-most boundary of CHP’s Valley Division (based out of Auburn) and Modesto is the northern-most boundary of CHP’s Central Division (based out of Fresno). Since Stockton is directly in the middle of these two divisions, the city rarely receives helicopter support.
