Young Legislators Program

The Young Legislators Program is an educational initiative for local high school students with a passion for government. The Program offers a transformative experience for younger individuals who are eager to explore governance, develop leadership skills, and make a positive impact in their communities. It aims to nurture the next generation of informed and engaged leaders by immersing them in local politics and civic participation.

Key program highlights:

  1. Monthly Field Visits:
    • Students will meet with elected San Joaquin County Supervisors and Stockton City Councilmembers (including the Mayor) to understand how they reached their roles, their responsibilities in the Office they hold, and the impact they have on their community.
  2. Meeting with Assemblymember Carlos Villapudua:
    • Students will meet with Assemblymember Villapudua to inquire about career pathways and policy priorities for San Joaquin County and California.
  3. Issue Selection and Advocacy Training:
    • Students will explore local issues and learn best advocacy techniques and communication skills to support important policies.
  4. Mock Legislation:
    • The program will culminate in a mock legislative committee hearing and vote at the State Capitol to put participants’ learned skills to the test.
  5. Certificates and Graduation:
    • Participants will receive certificates of completion and access to advocacy resources, celebrating their graduation from the program.

High school students who are passionate about government, advocacy, and community involvement.

Program launch:

The deadline to apply is Sunday, March 31, 2024. Email the completed application to Marina.Narvarte@asm.ca.gov. Admissions decisions will be made and communicated to each applicant by Monday, April 8.

The program runs from April through June 2024 and includes three local field trips and a day trip to the State Capitol in Sacramento.
